Grants may be offered based on merit or financial need and can come from the federal government or may be state-funded.
Federal Grants
The federal government offers the following need-based grants
Pell Grants
A federal grant provided by the federal government to undergraduate students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. The Pell Grant award amount is prorated based on Enrollment Intensity.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)
A federal grant awarded by the institution to qualified undergraduate students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. Priority is given to Federal Pell Grant recipients.
Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grants
TEACH grants are offered to students who want to become teachers and teach in high-need fields in low-income areas. TEACH grants come with a commitment to teaching for a certain length of time.
Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants
Iraq and Afghanistan service grants help students whose parent or guardian died during military service in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Children of Fallen Heroes
Awarded to undergraduate students who are Pell Grant eligible and whose parent or guardian died in the line of duty while performing as a public safety officer. State Grants
Many states offer grants to students attending college.

Criteria for state-funded grants and scholarships vary by state. It is well worth your time to do your research to find out if you are eligible for a state-funded grant or scholarship. Your guidance counselor will be able to direct you to information about any available programs for your state. Additionally, more information about deadlines for state-funded grants and scholarships can be found on the Federal Student Aid website.
WashU Grants
Washington University offers several grants to our students as part of our commitment to making college affordable to all of our students. Some of these initiatives include the first-year startup grant and the technology grant. These grants do not need to be paid back to the university.
