Calculating your financial assistance
Your expected family contribution is subtracted from the university’s cost of attendance to determine your financial need.
Your expected family contribution (EFC) is the amount your family will be expected to contribute toward your college costs at WashU.
- Calculated based on WashU’s institutional methodology, using data from the CSS Profile
- It is a specific dollar amount
- Applicable for one academic year
- We don’t consider home equity when determining financial aid—one of the few universities in the country with this policy
We’ll provide a financial assistance offer that ensures cost doesn’t stand in the way of making a WashU education a reality. This offer includes different types of assistance.
Parent Contribution
Factors that determine parent contribution at WashU include both income, assets, number of family members, and number of siblings in college.
Student Contribution
We expect most students to contribute to their college costs from their savings and summer earnings. In general, 20 percent of student assets are expected as their contribution each year.
